Does anyone have a photo, or drawing of the accelerator linkage for a '38 Master Deluxe? I am reassebling everything and hate to admit it, but I can't figure out how to put it back together. There is a horizontal rod from the accelerator pedal to a linkage piece on the side of the engine. Then there is a vertical rod up to the throttle on the carb. It could be that I don't have all the right parts, so a source of these parts would be helpful also. thanks.

Linkage is the same from 1937-40.There should be a stud sticking out of the block.There is a cast lever that pivots on it plus another stamped lever for the hand throtle mechanism.The horizontal (rear rod to pedal)attaches to one end of the cast lever and the rod going up to the carb. to the other. The stamped hand throttle rod is installed so the hand throttle can be used independently from the foot pedal.If you need more directions will need to look at mine tommorow.See if you can find your parts. Looking forward to you reply Chevnut. Since, on my 40, the throttle wire and accelerator link seem to now share the same link to the Carter W1 carburetor (don't recall how it got that way-it was 40 years ago). I simply unhooked the throttle.

I guess I never found much use for the throttle after I left Minnesota. No longer needed those extended warm-up periods on sub-zero mornings anymore. Oh yeah. There is still an AC block heater in the engine :rolleyes: , which I also unhooked - I'm in South Carolina now.

Does any one ever ask you what the Block heater cord is for? Many retirees in MT state that they are going to leave the state and drive south until some one asks them what that cord dangling from the front of the car is for. When that happens they feel that this is the spot to retire to.

1937-40 throttle linkage explained as good as possible.....There is a stud screwed into block that levers mount to.First lever to be installed is the heavier cast lever.It has an adjusting screw thru the center which faces forward (adj. nut to fire wall) Rod to gas pedal in top hole and pull back spring in lower hole.(front of pull back spring hooks to smaller stud with two groves that is pressed into block just forwad of ex.pipe.Stamped metal lever goes on next.longer arm goes to rear-rod going up to carb. fits into hole at rear of arm.Tab on front of stamped arm bumps against adj. screw. on cast arm.Another pull back spring hooks to stamped arm(lower end) and also hooks to front stud.Nut & washer hold lever to stud.When foot pedal is depresed the cast lever pushes on the stamped lever and the carb.opens.If the hand throtle is pulled out the rod up to the carb. will move but the cast lever doesen't so the pedal isnt affected.Ofcoarse the hand throttle wire holds rod to carb. lever on top and prevents rod from falling out of carb.as well as allows foot pedal to operate carb. independently .........If a picture is required I can furnish a rather poor one that is in the 1937 Engineering book.Would need to send it snail mail as I don't have a real computer as yet but Santa is bringing one for Christmas. <img border="0" alt="[santa]" title="" src="graemlins/santa.bmp" /> <img border="0" alt="gifts" title="" src="graemlins/gift.bmp" />

Thanks, everybody. And thanks Chev Nut. I will try it again, and if I am still having trouble in a couple of weeks, I will let you know if I need the drawing.

The block heater story sounds a lot like the snow shovel story I heard years ago. You know, strap a snow shovel on the front of you car and start driving south. When someone asks you what's that strapped on the front of your car, you know you've found a good place to stop!

Well, the cord is no longer there, but those who have looked at the engine have asked what that gadget sticking out of the block is.

And the variation of the story I heard was with a snow plow on the front of a pick-up.

And ChevNut, I have printed out your directions to see if I can get it hookedup again if the parts are still there.

docB...I failed to mention a minor detail.The throtle wire comes straight down from above thru the hole in the end of the rod that pivots in the lever on the carb.This retains the rod but requires a throttle stop (little brass job with screw thru it to lock on cable) and will pull up carb. lever when throttle is pulled out on dash.Throttle stop can be purchased in small engine repair shops or you can find them in parts stores on the HELP brand misc. little parts display. ..Is your 40 running again..was planning on Emailing you soon

ChevNut,

No, it's not running yet. As long as I had the plugs, wires, coil, etc. off, I figured I might as well get all the rust and grease off the rocker arm and push rod covers and paint them the original Chevy "Blue-Grey".


I did that and it looks great, but with Ice storms, with our power being off for 5 days, and 2 trips to Minnesota (1300 miles one way) to see my very ill Mother, I finally gave up and had it towed to the guy who made the car roadworthy after I brought it down here.

I should have it back on the road in a couple weeks and be able to drive it to a garage where my new son in law works to have my new BF Goodrich White Walls mounted.
