The 1939 has the noisey straight spur gears for low and reverse. The 1940 has the beveled gears whick make 75% less gear noise.

Thanks Chev Nut I wonder if this would be a direct bolt on in my 48 chevy car.

thought I read in my 41-48 manual that the car and truck were basically the same except that the car linkages are side and truck was top loader, what If I used the truck bellhousing.Hmm,maybe the years are different.

Some of the gears are the same and the rear shaft is a different length. The truck 3 spped is designaed to bolt up to a truck bellhousing which has a different bolt pattern so either a 3 or 4 speed will bolt up to the trak bell housing.

Sounds like I'll be fixing the ole car tranny,My brother inlaw has a 39-40 truck and I noticed it was an enclosed drive line, and then when I read in my manual, thought it would bolt right up ,and was gonna rebuid my car tranny, but if the truck would work then I woud just rebuild it.Thanks for your input chev nut didn't know the rear shaft was longer, guess it would just create more of a headache than it worth.
