Have just new valve job with seats and guides. New plug wires, distributor cap, plugs etc. Numjber 3 plug is still fouled with soot much like you find that comes out the tail pipe. Black smoke coming out of the tail pipe.
Adjusted the screww on the carburetor still doesn't fix the problem. Plug wires are on the distributor cap 1,2,4,3, to the corresponding plugs. I was thinking valve springs but all compression checked out when I used the guage. This one has me stumped as it is only number 3 plug. Have set the rockers to 8 and 6 thousandths buy intake and exhuast.

I don't know what you are using for plugs, but I recommend the Autolite 3077.

If this is a new job you need to put some miles on the engine.

You don't indicate you have done anything to the bottom so you may have a ring problem on your #3.

In any case, for now, put some miles on it with a hot plug.

Thanks Ray. Am using Autolite 3076 but will try 3077 in the morning. I think I have it isolated enough. Will try one thing at a time..

Intake clearance should be 0.006" hot,and exhaust should be 0.008" hot.

Changed out the plugs this morning to no avail. Number three plug continues to foul with carbon. Changed the plug wire to number three, still no solution. Checked the distributor cap and rotor. have good spark to number three. Sooo...my thinking is the only thing that is left are the rings. I could have a stuck or worn oil ring. will make one more compression test hopefully today.

Remove the plug on #3 and pore in some ATF, MMO, or solvent and run it a while till it is all burned out and perhaps repeat as necessary.

I think I found the problem. Did a compression test on ally the pistions. Number one 55 lbs, number 2 55 lbs, number 3 25 lbs, number 4 53 lbs. I will be I have a stuck ring or rings. Won't know util I tear it down tomorrow. I inserted a speciality tool into number three and turned on my compressor. Air went by and into the oil pan. Will keep you posted.

While you are waiting to tear it down, try one of my suggested remedies as noted above. May save you some time.
