I have been talking with Garmin about the power requirements of their units so I can use my GPS in my 28. They are acually willing to help! So far it seems the plug in cable may have an internal regulator to bring the input from 10-30v down to 5v, but they are checking on it to be sure. Sure would be nice on long tours and not have the battery go dead! So , how many of you guys use a GPS or would if you could wire one in the old cars?

Definitely! If there's no other easy solution, a 12V motorcycle or trailer brake battery might work well. It should last a long time with the small load of a GPS.

Hello
In my Sports Roadster 1930, I use a Nokia 5230 3,7 V. Battery mobile phone with GPS and with NOKIA - cable for charging, I've mounted a Sigar jack and the charger perfect.

I'm using a Garmin Map 76, powered by a 6-12 volt converter. Also have a connection available to plug in the cell phone charger or the handheld CB. The converter itslef is very small, maybe 2 inches square, and is hidden behind the dash. I use the GPS mainly as a speedometer and trip meter.
We used it in Mongolia to navigate across the country. A preplanned route was loaded into the receiver and all we had to do was follow the line on the screen. As simple as this was, several cars got lost trying to navigate solely by the route book. With directions like: "Track moves away from power lines" and "Many tracks choose best" trying to cross the country without following the GPS route was asking for trouble.

Keep us up to date. It would be nice to be able to use a GPS without having to set up a 12v battery.

If it isn't broken, fiddle with it anyway so you have something to repair.
