Hello
I rescued a 1938 Chevrolet engine from scrap space.
It is from an estate and is brand new and complete, see pictures on this link: http://chev.mono.net/9627/1938%20Ingine total of new parts and a look of it has been up for a test bench and been adjusted so that it was ready to put in your car and have done so in a dry basement since 1938, when the man bought a new chevy 1938 and believed that he would have an extra engine standing, he got so never need it, the house and the engine went ii inheritance to his son who left it, perhaps because it was big and heavy, now he is also dead as it should have been on the scrap site.
I can not use it for my 1930 Sports Roadster, or rather, I will not mount such a new engine in a 1930 model.
It has cast iron number of head # 838,773, and powered the # 393,345 cut in the cast number # 838710 which says to Model 1937 + 1938th
What other models and vintages, this engine is mounted in, it can be used up to 1954, I will try to sell it to a lack of a new engine, I personally believe that it must be disassembled to get its bearings and other parts lubricated and oiled before you start it up again, it's probably been dry.

838710 is a 1938 engine. By looking at the type of vacuum advance and serial nummber ledge it confirms it is a 1938 engine. The 1937 did not have the serial number ledge and the 1939 used the more modern looking vacuum advance. Chevrolet discontinued the 1937 engine by 1939 and the 1938 was sold for replacement in a 1937. Then chevrolet discontinued the 1938 engine was sold for replacement in 1937 and 1938 after that time.
Yes, the engine would need to be disassembled and reoiled. I have seen new engines that sat unused for 25 years and the oil clinging to the bearings was like rubber.
The engine could be used in a 1937-1938 or 1939. The flywheel and clutch and flywheel housing will be different from a 1937

The engine pictured may have been used , because the clutch throw out fingers are showing a reasonable amount of wear on the area of the throw out bearing. Or the clutch was pirated from this engine, to put on the car and the old clutch pressure returned to this engine.

The glossy fingers are glare from the flash light on Kamara, has no wear, the fingers are completely flat, as when the clutch pressure plate is fastened together, at the new clutch.

The fact that it has the acceerator linkage, generator and fan belt and a few other things makes me doubt if it was a factory engine. The factory engines that I was fimilar with (like in a950) did not come with any of the items that would be painted black. Just the engine and all the "gray" bolt ons + the spark plugs.
It may have been removed from a new or almost new 1938. That fact that the paint is burnt off the exhaust manifold sows it has had some run time.

Hi Chev nut
Cylinder block and Bell housing, front plate, pulleys, cylinder head, power distributor advance, water pump, sump, side plate and the valve cover, new parts, spark plugs are only a little bit sooty by a short start-up of the engine in and out manifold is not new, as you has come in with that paint is burned away.I think the engine is assembled by the local party shop and ready to mount in your car.
