Under my 38 coupe about where the door handle is located above there are two brackets, one on each side. They are about 4 inches long and have one bolt that is tapped into the frame. It looks like a piece of channel. It looks like they came from the factory that way. They aren't used for anything that I can tell. Any ideas what they are for? Is it something to do with the radio antenna that is fastened to the underside of the running boards? My car doesn't have a radio, but I'm trying to guess what they are used for. The frame has a tapped out thread to secure this bracket. Just wondering.

Do they extend under the running board? I'm not where I can crawl under my car at the moment but I don't remember anything like that on mine other that the running board brackets. Picture???

No. They are mounted on the frame. I'll try to get a photo.

I tried to get a photo but the concrete blocks are in the way.

Maybe later. This bracket is smaller than the frame is wide. It does not extend over to the running boards.

Below is a pic of the under side of my '37 coupe's running board. Do you see the brackets in question?

yes. See it mounted to the bottom of the frame. Looks like tubing running under it. What is that? My car doesn't have that. If you marked the center of that photo...it's dead center.

Disregard my e-mail. I replied to it before coming here. Without going out & crawling around on the floor to look at mine, IF I'm seeing what you're referring to, it looks like a fastener exiting the middle of it. If that's correct it might be a body mount location. Now you have me curious and I'll have to go get dirty. laugh

I just got back in from the garage and without jacking the car up to get my well fed self fully underneath I believe it's simply a body mounting point. If I'm wrong someone will point it out. It may have also been used to mount some optional something to as well but that's just a guess on my part.

What is all that hanging down on Bowtie Bobs photo? There's a curved piece of metal and some sort of tubing teeing off from it. I'm curious. I don't have any of that for sure.

The bracket I'm talking about must be for one of those type antennas. That's the only photo of a orginal radio antenna under the running boards I've ever seen.

Well, after looking at Bowtie Bobs picture, that IS a bonafied under the running board, antenna! I have a illustration of it in a pamphlet I got from Ray Holland on the installation instructions for my radio.

Yep, that IS an original running board antenna and it works very well. The car is basically unrestored (some body panels were repainted in the mid-50's) and I'm the third owner. It's a Sports Coupe and it's been all over the eastern seaboard, as well as driven to Rapid City, S.D. - 3600 mile round trip, without any problems whatever. Best, most trouble free car I've ever had, bar none.

I'm on my way out to the barn to check out that bracket. The car's still on the lift (I installed a dual M/C & new brake lines on it, but have been unable to finish it due to health problems.) I'll let you know what I find concerning the bracket.

OK, back in from the barn and Tiny is 'zactly right! The brackets (one on each side) are for two of the body to frame mounting bolts.

I took a picture (below) of one of the brackets in question, from the inside of the frame looking out. As you can see, there is a bracket attached to the under side of the floor board and which sits on top of the frame. What you can't see, is a bolt (3/8"?) which goes through the floorboards, just behind the outer edge of the seat. It goes through the upper bracket on the under side of the floorboard, through the frame and the lower bracket in question. It's secured by a hex nut.

Hope this helps.

My car has the under floor antenna, I cant tell you how its mounted, as it has been removed, by the paint shop, I could ask them next time m in there, if its important.
There the only pic Ive got showing it.

She's in the body shop at the moment awaiting new upholstery, Ive had her painted back to original color, Bancroft blue. Not the color in pic.
she's an Australian Built 37 commercial roadster.

I'd be interested in finding out how the coax was routed from the under-board antenna to the radio. Is there an existing pathway or was it necessary to drill a hole.

Ive been told the car is pretty much original, hard to find info, or pic on this model,
especially rear end shots.
as only about 200 ever made, and only about 5 with full doors.
I dont think that the plate is mounted as original, as modern plates are different.
Heres a better shot of her rear.
