My brake hoses are looking a little ratty. Everything works but it looks like it's time to replace them. Would a brake service center have a standard hose to replace each hose or is this a odd hose that needs to be ordered? My goal all along has been to get my old car safe and roadworthy.

Suspension...check
Axle seals..check
brake shoes..check

Can you tell I've been in maintenance for 40 years? GRIN

The rubber brake hoses were the same for all 1936-1950 cars and all three hoses are the same. The local parts house can order you new ones or you can get them from the Fillingstation.

All three brake hoses (identical to original) are available on eBay.

parkingGet them from your local NAPA store and save the ridiculous shipping fees charged by some of the mail order houses. Beamer

Beamer, my local NAPA charges me a $10.00 shipping fee for anything not in stock. Advance does not. Maybe NAPA has different shipping policies elsewhere. Best, Charlie

Over the years I have ordered lots of items from NAPA that were not in stock and they have never charged me a shipping fee. I deal with two different NAPA stores and it is the same at both...no shipping charges.

A really good brake upgrade, if you don't already have it, is old school asbestos linings. Although it hasn't been manufactired since the 80s it is still out there in abundance.

Changing from the presently offered "organic" to asbestos is almost like adding a power booster.

I have a local brake supplier who can still get asbestos and it shows up on ebay all the time.

perhaps, but is the risk of breathing in asbestos next change worth it.

It's not how fast you can go, but how good you look at 20 MPH.

parking 41specialdeluxe, I have never heard of such a thing. Having been a career military man, I have used NAPA stores all over the country and have never been charged anything extra for shipping. Even now when I go to FL to spend some time with relatives, I frequently go to a NAPA store with my brother-in-law and buy stuff there. On my most recent trip, they ordered me two amber and two red marker lights that I intend to use for turn signals on my '38. They had to order them and I had them in a couple of days paying just what the lights cost. Sorry you have to pay extra as you can still get a lot of stuff from NAPA for old cars, particular Chevy's as the 6 cyl. engine was, and still may be, used in much equipment of all kinds. Beamer

Beamer, I had ordered several things from them (NAPA) in the recent past. Each time they charged a $10.00 shipping free. The explanation was something about them losing money having to acquire the part not stocked by them. That then may explain the extra charge. Anyhow, I decided that I wasn't going to pay such charges again. I started going to Advance. They have never charged me a shipping fee no matter the source of the item. I too, like NAPA but their charging me a shipping fee just turns me off. I'll drop by again and order something that requires a shipping fee. I'll then name the item on here so everyone will know that I'm not making this up. Best, Charlie

Shawng, it is absolutely worth it. I put brakes on my '36 1/2 ton in about 1974. The small amount of mileage that this vehicle gets, even though it is driven not trailered, will probably neverwear out the brakes. The shoes still look nearly new.

I also have asbestos brakes on my street rod, a SBC powered 1932 Ford roadster. The difference in braking force between the

pads (GM Metric) and shoes (Ford) I removed and the asbestos I installed was truly amazing. I'd forgotten how good brakes once were.

Compared to the nasty chemicals that are in our food, drinking water and air, asbestos dust from antique car brakes and clutches seems an immesurably small health risk.

autoCharlie, I believe you when you say you are charged a shipping fee by NAPA when they order something for you that they do not carry in the store. I just thought it was strange as I had never run into that situation with a NAPA store. Beamer
