Hi all,

My 51 Deluxe steering wheel has some cracks that need repair and then painted. The outer wheel seems to be a hard rubber and has a few gouges that I would also like to fix.

Does anyone have some tips on repairing the cracks on the inner part and gouges on the outer rim? Also, any thoughts on painting the hard rubber?

Thanks, Don

Don- Good Morning!! This is how I repaired two steering wheels on a 31 and 33 with excellent results: thouroughly clean all cracks and abrasions using 100 grit paper, then apply JB WELD (a two part product), let it stand 24 hours and then bring it back to conformity using a file, fine sand paper, wipe with thinner and paint. I had good results using Rustoleum Professional high performance enamel (Gloss Black #7579) and Rustoleum`s Clear Gloss #249117 Good Luck!!

Thanks Hoppy for the info. I can see how the JB Weld would work for the wheel casting, but I'm not so sure if it would work on the hard rubber outer rim.

Thanks again, Don

JB Weld is a two part epoxy that is a good general purpose repair material. It will works well on hard rubber as long as the surface being bonded or repaired is clean and roughed to increase surface area and remove old material.

Thanks for the info on steering wheel restoration.

Does anyone know if the 1929 was also painted black?
