Hi All. I have someone from the state coming out tomorrow to check out the numbers on my '22. Where can I find the engine block ID number?

Thanks
Dan

Thanks Chip! She got home about an hour ago.Glanced through the box and looks like I'll be busy. Kathy said you might have some pictures of the top. Looking forward to seeing them.

Thanks again for everything!

Are you referring to a model 490? What clutch pedal arrangement do you have on yours?

OK, I still cannot find the engine number. I am attaching two views of the engine on my 1922 FB50. Can someone actually put an arrow pointing to where it should be? The fellow from the DPS that came out could not find it either.

Thanks
Dan

Chip is correct - the engine number is stamped on the left front cross arm [engine support]. It is stamped on the top surface about half way between the engine and the frame. You might have to wire brush this top surface because it his usually rusty. Since this is a GM Saginaw built engine your engine should have a A or B prefix like A20123 and a stamped cloverleaf is sometimes found after the number.

The location is not logical and in an unexpected place. It is not on the engine! It is on the top of the front motor mount plate that attaches to each frame rail. The plate bolts to the front of the engine.

I have a question. Where does the second battery cable go to? I see the one from the switch. My 23 Olds truck uses this same engine and only has one cable hooked to the starter which works great but it does have two terminals.

on my 1928 sedan the positive battery cable goes to the starter switch on the toe board and the short negative cable is fastened to a bolt on top of the transmission.

I was wanting to know about the Auto Lite starter on the FB engine. They have two terminals on the starter. Mine only has one hooked up but it does work that way.

Bob - Did you find the engine # off your FB front left engine support? Perhaps you could now list the engine #, engine block date code, and Car No. off both of yours FB and 1923 Olds 1 ton?

The FB Instruction Book shows the neg battery cable going directly to the Auto-Lite starter which is the same on my 1918 Model D5. So the block and frame is grounded internal to the housing case of the starter. The Olds 1 Ton Instruction Book shows the neg battery cable being ground to the frame, so the ground path is then from the frame, to the block, & to the starter housing case. No ground strap was used from the frame to the neg starter post so relied on good clean electrical connection between the starter and the frame.

Success! It appears that my number is B7878. Does that sound about right? It was under several layers of paint. Woo-hoo!

Dan, your FB engine #B7878 should be the original engine for a 1922. It was built by the Saginaw Products Company in Saginaw and was used in the 1921-3 Olds and Chev 1 Ton Trucks and the later FB and 43A cars.
What is your FB Car No. on the "Baby Grand" nameplate on the toe board? Did you find a block date code or cyl head date code?
