Hi guys,
I'm considering changing the rear end ratio on my '46 1/2 ton from stock 4:11 to a taller rear end. I have seen 3:55 ratios for sale, but nothing in between. How much difference would be noticed pulling up moderate grades with the 3:55 change? Also does anyone know if there is an 3:70 or so ratio that would fit my application and if so a source? I have a 3 speed now.

I have done similar ratio change on a much later model and noticed a slight change but with light loading should not be a problem.

I would call the 3.55 a flat land ratio. On long hills at speeds - or if the speed drops under 40 MPH - the power drops off fast. If you can keep the RPM's up and speed above 50 on steeper hills your OK. If you go slower and down shift to 2nd your limited to 30-35 MPH. I would agree tha the 3.70 is an excellent choice. If you don't plan on driving over 50 MPH or so I would keep the 4.11.
There was a 3.82 option at one time but its only a 7 or 8 percent improvement....thats like 3 MPH at 50 MPH. The 3.70 would be a 10% improvement (5 MPH at 50 MPH) and the 3.55 a 15% reduction in engine speed or 7.5 MPH at 50 MPH.

Thanks Guys for the input. Regarding the 3.70 gears, does anyone know where I may look for such a replacement or who I should check with?
