I recently have been told that Chevrolet never offered a Sun tach as an option on any Chevrolet cars with 409 engines, or for that matter, any engine. Yet, it seems I remember seeing them on early 60's Chevrolet cars and they were referred to as "knee knockers". Not knowing for sure either way, I thought I would ask here. Thank you!

I have a "knee knocker" for my 1966 Chevelle. The tach is to be mounted just to the right of the steering column on the lower front part of the dash. I guess that it why it is called a knee knocker? On the inside of the tachometer, the case is moulded with an "AC" logo.

Hello in Texas,

Your memory isn't too faded... yes Sun did supply the tachometers which were used in the 1961/62 SS models, and thereafter. Available also as an accessory.

I do not know the year they no longer offered Sun as the accessory tach.

There was a "black box" on the driver side fenderwell - which also contained a battery for the sending unit to function properly. Today, most of these boxes have been converted, as well as the tachs, to function properly without the sending unit. The sending unit is now functioning strictly as an appearance item.

The Sun tachs were also offered as a dealer install on the 59-60 High Perf cars, maybe even earlier according to the parts book. Listed in the parts book even in 1966 under group 9.750 as 55-60 Head Assembly part number 3781532. I have seen one NOS in the box and the Chevrolet part number is on a sticky back label over the sun part number.

Ollie,
You forgot that converstion at Princeton NJ at least 10 years ago when both my 60 and Don's 60 had one. I think we were even showing you the paperwork that rainy afternoon. They are rare but then again so are the 340 and the 350 HP 348's let alone two side by side.

Ollie; I am going to send you an e-mail don't forget dinner at Dante & Luigi's in Philly in two weeks

John

Hi John,

I recalled those tachometers and boy do they look nice!
I was not clear in my own head on when Chevrolet started to offer them - hence my 61-62 reference.

Hmmmmmm dinner in South Philly?????
