Okay, bear with me - it's been more than 30 years since I changed the oil in an old Chevy rear differential. Just want to be sure I'm not overlooking something - I need to pull the inspection cover on my 39 Mstr Dlx to drain it, right?
Also, it was mentioned in another posting that all major brands of gear oil these days are good for hypoid gears. However, when I read the back of some containers, some say to use only for top-off of limited slip gears. Do I need to be concerned about that and pick a different brand?

Its is not necessary to remove the cover. Juse remove the two lower cover bolts. Best done when gear oil is warm and flows better. Also remove the filler plug to allow air to enter. I would recommend using 85W-140 and all brands are OK. The limited slip gear oil has an anti-friction additive to prevent clutch plate chatter in the limited slip differentials. There is no reason it could not be used in all but generally cost more and is not necessary.

The 1937-1954 differentials hold 1 and 1/2 Qts....so buy 2 Qts.
