Howdy.

I finally found & purchased a 1941 Guide Super Ray Passing Light for my 41 coupe.

It is restored and ready to bolt on. It was One lead wire. Where does that wire connect ?

I do NOT have a switch yet so as a temp. I will use a toggle switch under my dash.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Michael41

The passing light is operated from a switch marked "AUX" that is mounted on the lip of the dash on the left side of the steering column in one of the 4 holes provided.

Ray, Umm. Ok.

But If I take the wire from the light and run it to the Switch, what makes the light "lite" up?

There is ONLY one wire on the light. So, In other words, where does the power come from ?

Thanks

Mike run a "Hot wire" from the ampmeter or the ignition switch to the other side of the switch. That way the juice will get to the light bulb and the bulb will be lighted, provided the light is well grounded and the switch is good.

Glyn,

It's best of you read Ray Holland's article G&D, {July 2007} where he writes about 1941 accessories, including the "Lamp Passing" {1941 Accessory}. Ray is the expert on all 41 accessories.

That said, the GM Super Ray "Passing Lights/Lamps" were sold by Chevrolet as an accessory at the big price of $9.95 {which I wish I had paid} These lights are large, maybe 8.5 inches in Dia. and mount to the Front Bumper Brackets, using a mounting bracket like fog lights. So once installed they sit in front of the Grill.

The "Passing Light" for 1941 CHEVROLET seems to be exclusive to that year {see picture in Ray's article} as 1939-40 & 42-48 are different. I was told by a gentleman that restores these lights that Buick, Olds & Cad's "passing Lights" were/are different from the 41 Chevrolet version. But I do NOT know that for certain.

The Accessory parts book for 1941 Shows a nice picture of the light, and other '41 accessories.

Hope this helps answer your question, but I'M NOT the resident expert.
Enjoy the ride,
Michael41

Hello Michael:
I am no expert on Buick lights, but it is my understanding that Buick said "Driving Light" on the lens as oppossed to saying "Passing Light". Otherwise they are identical to the Chevy light.

1. Do you ever drive the 41 at night?

2. Do you ever pass anyone (especially at night)? auto :vcca:

biglSorry Mike, I couldn't resist!!! bigl

ps....we're gonna need to see a picture of the 41 with the 'passing light' installed. ok

To the left of the steering column, and on the lip of the dash, are 4 factory holes to mount a maximum of 4 accessory switches. When two or more switches are mounted they are connected by a "buss bar". Each switch is individually fused. All that remains to be done is to extend a wire from the switch to the accessory, be it for lights, heater or other item. The wire from the common A+ connection is normally connected to the (-) side of the amp meter. This means that any item in the "on" position will still operate if the ignition is "off". The radio is normally connected to the coil side of the ignition switch. This prevents the radio from running down the battery if left on and the ignition switch off.

Oh Ken, your so....accurate. Actually the answer is nope. don't drive the 41 at night. Have, but very little. But the new passing light will sure look cool, even if I don't/can't pass anyone.

Another reason for the purchase is because sometime ago a guy I was "counseling" asked me, "Are your lights all on fella?" So now I have another, light.

So to the "rest of you gentleman" thanks for your replys.
