I agree with the above other than doing the valves by your self.
First many of the engines will not be driven more than 1000 miles a year. You are not trying to get another 100,000 miles out of it.
That is the advantage of the old engines, they can be patched together and run fine for many thousands of miles.

Charlies list is pretty complete but I would add a rebuilt water pump, oil pump, carb and fuel pump and of course all the tune up items-plugs, points, dist cap and rotor, and air filter.

Charlie gets it. Great list and great realistic, cost-effective approach.

All the Best, Chip

Steve D,

iagree

Although the stinkin carburator should be ok or something would have been done to it. Use the old water pump. If it ain't leaking it will serve. Leaking is the main reason to change it and it is usually easy to do. Same with the fuel pump, starter, generator.

The clutch disc and throughout (clutch release) bearing should be replaced whilst the engine is out.

You made excellent points that I didn't cover. I'd just clean the plugs. Reuse the thermostat, fan belt, and mounts if in decent shape. Also, easy to replace.

i think Gene is a bit optimistic in figuring 100K one any old engine like we're talking about. I know that now, a few more thousand miles is all that I expect to drive. If that. (just did about 6K though; but not driving a 41. Agrin

BTW: Flush or fix the radiator.

If the oil pump is a gear type pump and pressure has been normal I would keep the old oil pump....have seen more problems with replacement pumps.
