anyone familar with decoding the numbers? I thought all chevy vins started with "1" but I'm looking at a nice 66 impala ss with a vin of 616437066880. looks like the car was manu in Canada - does that make sense?

GM of Canada used all seq numbers. You can can contact GM of Canada & they have record on the cars after 1946 I believe. They can tell you all about that car. Hopefully they are still providing that service.....Joe

Does that mean the car was made to meet Canadian requirements and would present problems to me in registering the car in the US? Thanks for the response.

You should'nt have any problems registering the car here. MVD just needs to know where the serial number is for Canadian cars of that year. One of mine is Canadian & I didn't have any problems. The problems you may have is decoding paint & interior. GM of Canada should be able to help on yours because it's newer. Mine is 34. Not too much info....Joe

Thanks again for the info. I emailed GM Canada yesterday and they have provided me with a phone number for the research group. I must say I'm a surprised that GM Canada had completely different coding, both VIN and Cowl from the US GM

I don't see that you're a member of the VCCA. I would advice you to join up if you're not. Lots of bennies. My info. breaks down that Canadian serial number as follows.

6=1966
16437=body style number (Impala 2 door hardtop)
Actual serial number 00001 and up (this cars serial #066880)

Engine numbers end in
2 if 283, and 4 if 327,396,427.
