I just noticed that I do not have a fuel filter in my recently acquired 1956 Bel air 6 cyl automatic.

It is solid steel line all the way from the new tank to the carb.

I took the line off going to the carb thinking that there may be one in the carb body but there wasn't.

Where is the best place to add one?

Thank you.

It is a mesh sock that is self cleaning. It slips over the pick up tube in the gas tank...........Chevrolet did not offer a gas filter for 1955 and 1956 models.the 1956 filter iis located in the gas tank.

Thank you. I did not know that. By self cleaning do you mean it needs to be removed, cleaned and reinserted every so many miles?

The sloshing of the gas i the tank cleans the filter. The"dirt" remains in the tank. would guess it was not intended to last 65 years.

I would recommend adding the glass bowl AC filter that fits in front of the carburetor. It’s nice to see what your carburetor is being fed.
