I found a website once that listed the net (vs. gross) on Chevrolet engines in the 1950's. I am specifically looking for 1956 right now. To prevent any confusion, gross (bare engine on dynamometer) is what was advertised, net was "as installed" in the car. Rear wheel was of course the entire car up the machine.
Does anyone have any knowledge on this?

Which 1956 engine are you intrested in?
As an example the passenger car 235 engine had 140 advertised HP and 125 net.
The 140 was with no generator or water pump or exhaust and timing set for Max. HP.
In the car and at the rear wheels it would have been much less than 125 HP.

Specifically the powerpack 205 horsepower engine. I am not sure, without looking at a brochure, what the next level down was for the 1956 V-8 265 CI.

The 162 HP engine (stick shift) was 137 HP
The 170 HP PG enge 140
The 205 HP PowerPac engine 170 HP
In 1971 all makes rated the engines at net HP plus actual H P decreased due to emissions so HP droped quie a bit.
