I recently purchased a '48 Chevy coupe that has a '57 235 engine. It only has a California air cleaner (very small chrome job) and I want to either put the correct one on it or use a '48 one if it will fit just to provide a more original appearance. Some words on which way to go would be helpful. In looking for a '57 on ebay, I saw a couple of different ones that the seller claimed to be for a 6 cyl. '57 Chevy. Could someone please post here or email me a picture of the correct one? It would help but is not necessary if it showed the correct decals. Thanks. Beamer

The 1955-1962 235 passenger car air cleaner is the big thing that hangs down in the front of the manifolds.
Does the carburetor have the flat flange where the air cleaner slips on on the top or the center screw with the little barcket in the top of the air horn?

It has the flat flange. It is a Rochester. It has a tag on it but I can't quite make it out. The number starts with a 71. I can take it off the carb and probably get the whole number. Beamer

If it has the flat flange a 1940-1948 air cleaner wil work. would try to find an oil bath air cleaner.

I have a 57 235 in my 37 p/u and using a 40s non oil bath air cleaner for a period look.

Why won't the '38 fit?

I didn't try it but you said a 40-48 will fit and I usually take your word as gospel :). Beamer

I was at a show today and looked at a 60 car with a 235 and if the motor came out of a car I doubt a older air cleaner will work,I think you will need to get the top of the carb from a truck since they still used the air cleaner that clamped to the top of the cab where the car has a wing nut. I have some junk truck carbs that have the parts you need.

Jeff, I NEED your help. I am new to this site. I was following this tread talking about late 50's carbs and air cleaners with Beamer, Chevy Nut and yourself. In your last post to that thread, you stated "I think you will need to get the top of the carb from a truck since they still used the air cleaner that clamped to the top of the cab where the car has a wing nut. I have some junk truck carbs that have the parts you need." Do you still have any Rochester BC Carbs with Manual choke and top using the old style air cleaner? I was looking at some pictures of a car carb that has the automatic choke and if you want to change the carb top make sure the top that will accept the air cleaner you want has the same type of choke as the carb you have. If it has a automatic choke then find the earlier version that takes the clamp on air cleaner that has the automatic choke and the same with a manual choke,if you have one with a automatic choke and want a manual there is few differences between the carbs that will make it much easier to get a truck carb and go from there.
