I purchased a set of replacement keys for my '51 Styleline and while they are blank, the grips are different. My online searching has told me that the one with the rounded grip is for the trunk and the flat grip is for the ignition.

Can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks.

I don't know about the 51 but by the time my 53 was made it was one key for everything. My 38 has the hex and round keys. The hex for the ignition and doors while the round is for the glove box and trunk.

From 1948-1953 one key fit everything. Had hex key only.

That's right! At least it has to be like that. My dad also had a '51 Styleline, and he told me the same thing. However, you have to be cautious, and if the car was made before '51, then it's vice versa. The one with the rounded grip is for the ignition, and the flat grip is for the trunk.

The first year for the one key was 1948.............

I see in your picture that the two keys you have are blanks - haven't been cut yet. Do you have the original key(s) that came with the car? If so, that key should work in the ignition, trunk lock and glove box lock. Let us know if that is correct.

Haase, the 1951 Passenger Car Owners Manual I just looked up online states the following under Keys & Locks on page 10: "Two identical car keys are furnished with the car which operate the front doors, the ignition switch, the glove compartment and the trunk locks." The illustration showing the key being inserted into the ignition lock looks to be six sided one and not the oval one. If you have an owners manual, take a look on page 10.

My old man told me some people kept breaking their keys back in the day because they didn't know which key to use. The funniest part is that my dad has also done that. He had to call for the services of mylocallocksmithtx.com as he broke the key, and half of it remained in the lock!
That's what I thought as well
