How do I distinguish the 54 standard trans from the earlier 49-52,my trans has GM 49 cast into the housing at the top of the trans,would this signify a 1949 trans?thanks in advance for any info.
The ID nouber is STAMPED into the case, left (drivers) side next to and in front of the cover -kind of down low.
If the first letter is a M or S it is a 1953 or 1954 trans.
If it is an A-B-C or D it is a 1949.
Chevgene,number stamped into front of case reads GA170526,sure appears to be a G,could it be a C? definitely not a M or S,I suspect it is a 49-52 trans,what is your opinion? thanks in advance.
I agree, it is a 1949-1952 tranmission. The 1953 transmission had a few improvements including two rows of needle bearings between the main drive gear and main shaft to cure the jumping out of high problem the previous moels had as well as the cluster gear having needle bearings rather than brass bushings.
In mid 1953 more improvements were made in the transmission including tightening up the various tolerances to reduce clutch chatter and gear rattle, making the 1954 unit the best possible choice.

The '54 will interchange into the '49 to '53 ?
The 1952-1954 CASE does not have the bolt holes in the rear for the 1949-1951 type mount. The 1952-1954 is bolted to the mount by the rear extension rather than the case. Some of the 1952-1954 cases have the dimples that could be drilled and tapped for mount holes.
The 52-54 extension can be mounted on the 49-51 transmission to install a 49-51 tranny in a 52-54 . Checking as posted above by Chevnut will help to verify the correct identity of the transmission.
I hesitated about adding that as I don't recommend using the '52 and prior transmission in a 1953-54 car.
I thought it might be good to know so if someone is looking for a tranny for a 53-54 they don't end up with an earlier one .
OK I THINK I UNDERSTAND,THE TRANS I HAVE JUMPS OUT OF GEAR IN HIGH AFTER SUSTAINED HIGHWAY SPEED (50-55 MPH.) THE TRANS MOUNT IS THE REAR EXTENSION BUT IT HAS DRILLED AND TAPPED HOLES UNDER THE CASE ITSELF WHICH APPEARS IT WOULD BOLT TO A MOUNT,THANKS,I SHIMMED THE DETENT SPRINGS FOR MORE PRESSURE ON THE DETENT BALLS,IF THIS DOESN'T WORK OUT I WILL LOOK FOR THE CORRECT TRANS>
