Did the 1946 Pickup have the horn switch in the column center horn button or was it outside somewhere else? Mine is outside I've had the steering wheel off I don't see where the wire should go.

The horn is operated by depressing the center horn button in the usual manner. When the original parts ceased to function it was customary to add the column mounted button.
There is a bushing/horn contact in the upper part of the steering column.A wire enters the column in the lower part of the column and attaches to the contact that is in the upper part-just below the steering wheel. The two long wires(rods) on the bottom of the horn button ground on the contact and the horn will blow. Most common fix is to replace the wire in the column and the horn contact/column bushing.

Hi Geno,

You may wish to spend a few minutes reading up on your horn.
HORN OPERATION

I have removed the steering wheel found only a bearing for the steering rod. No place for a wire to go. There isn't enough room to have a wire since the bearing which is needed is there. I also have felt the entire length of the steering outer shell no place for a wire to enter.

Did you go read the HORN OPERATION? The wire attaches at the BOTTOM of the bushing and can't be seen from up above.

Hi Geno,

May as well post the answer here for all to see. The picture is applicable to all trucks (except COE)from 1941 to 1946.

HELP! We need one of the truck experts to jump in here and help.

On the parts explosion above I am convinced that the part labeled 2.820 is in error and for the 1942-46 truck is actually 2.819. This would then be the contact for the horn and the horn wire 2.819 would connect to this part?

I'm no expert, but my '42 parts book lists:..

2.819 wire assembly, horn button contact...

2.820 cap - retainer, horn button...

Check a later parts book, like 29-48.

The correct original replacement wire for your 46 PU is:Gr. 2.859 PT.#266218 Application is 1939 JA ,1940-46 All Comm and Utility (exc. COE), this wire is 45 1/8" long and has the correct terminal on the end that attaches to your wire harness. The other end has a dab of solder for attaching to the bottom of the upper bearing. These wires used to could be found pretty often at swap meets but I haven't seen one lately. I have had several over the years. The illustrations that Ray and Keith posted are correct for your truck.

The steering column shown in the conventional truck description is like the one in my truck except that mine does not have the bumper number 2.837.
