Does anybody have any info. about special colors and or two-tone colors that may have been avil. only on the pace cars. All pics I have seen show solid colors only,I found an old color chart for 1948 chevrolet
however did not see any "special" two-tone colors avil. One old picture I have seen shows a pace car on the Indy track that appers to be silver which may have been a special pace car color?
Any info would be helpful.

Seeing the 1948 Indy Pace Car was a convertible it would have been a solid color. If I remember correctly it was either Dove Gray (light gray) or Satin Green (light green)-but it was a standard production color.

PDX joe could certainly confirm the color of the 48 pace car. In the meantime, this photo seems to clearly show Dove Gray as the color.

On the way to the VCCA 40th Anniversary Meet in Springfield, Illinois, I drove my 1940 coupe into the infield at Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway. I specifically asked the Museum Curator for information on the 1948 Chevy Convertible Pace Car. he had very little information other than a Black & White picture of it. He stated that many of the early pace cars were given to the winner of the Indy 500 as a "bonus" for winning the race.

Happened to see this on ebay after reading this post the other day. Is it a repaint with the two tone paint scheme???

Take a look at his valve cover and it will give you an indication of his value of correct colors.

The red paint indiactes the engine has a high compression valve cover which was part of the "pace car package"........There is no end to what these Ebay sellers can dream up.

E-Bay A place where grown men can tell lies about their cars! So is this the special high perf package sporting a huge 8:1 compression ratio?

I have a photograph of an Indy Pace Car I purchased at the Speedway several years ago. It clearly is one color. I believe it to be light gray because back in 48 you would not have found green on cars on the track. They believed is was bad luck. Jimmy Clark broke that tradition when he had a green race car and started the move away from the front engine roadsters to the rear engine cars.

Hey John...your comment is right on! Let the buyer beware.
By the way, that thing is an eye-sore! It would look much better in a solid color, IMHO.

I believe I saw that car at a Cruise In back in 2001. It was for sale then. I like the starting price of $20,000,00. Good luck.

I would be willing to bet that the original 1948 chevrolet pace car was junked out 50 years ago...The only special feature was the decal on the door.

The '48 Indy Pace Car was dove gray. I've seen some reproductions which were dove gray. It probably had the red interior rather than the blue. It was driven by Wilber Shaw with Chevrolet Sales Manager Tom Keating as his passenger. The was also a AAA Chevrolet Cabriolet there which was also a light color, probably dove gray, too. And, there was a Fleetline Aerosedan and a deluxe panel there also...Gene was right saying the two light colors were dove gray and satin green. The others were dark colors...Dove gray was, in my observation at the time, the most common color..There were no two tone colors on cabriolets...The cabriolets weren't available in the full list of '48 solid colors...
