I am a relatively recent owner of a 1931 Chevy Sedan Special and am mystified as to how to get gas in the tank without forcing the nozzle thru a very narrow gap between the body of the car and the trunk. what am I missing?

Nothing. The trunk was an added accessory and it leaves a very narrow gap to refuel the car. Best bet is to get a long funnel at your local car parts place and use that to do the refueling.
