I know the "cat's eye" cigarette / cigar lighter pictured below is correct for 1937, but weren't the same units used well into the 40's ? Can anybody tell me which years it's correct for?

My 1940 came with a cat's eye. Not sure what other years, but I was sure happy to have one. The lady I got the car from was a non smoker so it's virtually unused. :)

They looked like that thru 1948---no more "cats eyes" in 1949.The number changed a few times and minor changes were made between 1937 and 1948.Number was the same from 1941-48.

"Cat Eye Cigarette Lighter" !, Explain this to me. I'm a Truck guy, Why is it called this. Does it light up, or something.

The center of the knob had a green glass eye.When the lighter is "red hot" it will glow-can only be seen in the dark and then not too well.It was a Casco product as they made the lighters for GM back then.The lighter would pop out when hot so wasn't really that necessary.It was a throw back to the earlier lighters that weren't automatic and you held them in until you thought they were hot.The same lighter was an accessory for trucks.

Take a look at the picture in the first post. You will notice a small portion of the end of the lighter is green colored. That is a piece of colored glass that will reflect the glow from the element when it becomes red hot. That will indicate the lighter is ready to use and it should "pop-out" automatically.

SAD STORY: I have the "cats eye" lighter in my 1941. Several years ago I was using the 1941 as a service vehicle when we sponsored a NW Meet. I loaded several boxes in the passenger side of the front seat to transport to the banquet room. In driving the boxes shifted and ended up pressing in the lighter, and blocked it's "pop-out" feature. I parked the vehicle to unload the boxes and went inside for a few minutes. When I returned the inside of my car was filled with smoke (no flames yet). It took me a few minutes to figure out what the problem was. By that time it had burned the wire under the dash (source of the smoke). I moved the box and without thinking grabbed the over heated lighter. Didn't take long to find I had looked at it long enough and I dropped it on the ground where it immediately rolled down a sewer drain.
