I realize there are probably differences but my son has just acquired a C60 and a C50 RHD truck. The C50 has an Australian compliance plate dated 1984 and both cabs look identical so hoping they are the same model. The issue we have is we havent been able to find the number stamped into the chassis, we have a 3" alloy plate with what I suspect is the identification number but doesnt appear in the chassis. We have found some numbers stamped behind the front shock absorbers on both sides but the numbers dont match anything. I suspect it should be on the top flange forward of the RH engine mount but didnt want to remove the paint until sure we were looking the right place.

Tony,
Looks like there are no big truck guys here who can help you. Have you been over to The Stovebolt Forums?

I havent looked at Stovebolt as my impression they were more pre 1960 model forum, I had planned on asking on the HAMB forum as well but asked known friends here 1st. I seem to remember another Chev truck forum being mentioned in years gone by but the name eludes me now.
I thank you for replying just the same Mike.

If I understood your original post, your trucks are from the mid 80s. The '73-'87 trucks, in pickup sizes, are referred to as "square body" trucks. Stovebolt added these trucks to the forum about a year ago. I don't know how active the conversation might be, but it's worth a look. Good luck.

Tony I do have some 60's GMC Master Parts Books and some 50 and 60 series models list the same cab model. Not finding any info on chassis S/N location but will keep looking and let you know if I do.

Hi Tony

There is a thread on Stovebolt in which they say the serial number on a 1966 C60 is stamped into the top side of the top frame rail, on the left side, near the steering gear.
This would be on an American left hand driver, so yours may be on the other side?
Here is a link to the thread:

Hope that helps.

Tony,
Does your 1984 Compliance plate mean that they are 1984 models. I am unclear on what year model they are. Do they have titles or whatever paper work is normally required for Aussie vehicles? I had forgotten, but I might have parts books that cover USA models. There could be VIN info there or in my Hollander Interchange books.

They C50 has the Aus compliance plate stating 1984 Aus compliance (complying to Aus design rules) and the C60 cab is identical so I am guessing they both are about the same age. Though 84 compliance in Aus may mean 83 in the US.

Tony,
I stopped by my old shop to check out the big truck parts books. 1976 is the newest one I have. Any luck at Stovebolt ?

I think we found it yesterday. At least we found a number on the C50 that matches in with the Aus compliance plate and a number on the C60 in the same location so that solves 1/2 of the problem, the other half is dealing with our version of the DMV about the missing compliance plate but having a frame number is a good start as that is the main identification point down here.
Thank you to all that advised me on this issue.

Tony would you let us know where the number was stamped for possible future use.

The number we found on the left frame rail vertical face outside just rearward of the front crossmember is and forward of the front axle, 1 photo shows what looks like power steer pump but the description indicated the top horizontal face. It is rather lightly stamped so could be like my 38 and stamped here in Aus after importation so may not be on the US trucks, on the C50 it only matches up with the Aus compliance plate.
When I get to see the truck again myself I will try to remember to take a pic.

Thanks Tony. I worked in parts for a Volvo/GM dealer where the heavy truck GM parts were serviced. I contacted a source that still works in parts that I think still has the parts books but the dealership had changed hands in the last couple of weeks and the books I believe that had the info was "somewhere in a crate".
