A fellow VCCA member wants to fix his "sagging" outside front door handle on his 1940 Chevrolet. I have both the Front Left & Right NOS Door Locks - Group 10.470 ( Located inside the doors ). He instead wants to just replace the spring inside, which is located inside the doors. The 1929-1941 Master Parts Price List does not appear to list any replacement springs. In the 1929-1947 Master Parts Price List it shows a drawing of the spring as 10.474, however it says that they fit the back door only.
Did Chevrolet ever sell replacement front door lock return springs? I have 4 NORS 1940 Door Lock Springs that I can fix him up with. I was just wondering IF Chevy also sold them.

From my experience with the 41-48 front door locks, it’s not the spring that causes the handle to sag. The rectangle end of the outside handle engages into an brass colored alloy pawl/flipper secured to the door lock mechanism. The alloy pawl wears where it goes through the door lock mechanism. I haven’t found a way to remove it without destroying it. Maybe the 40 locks are similar. Mike
