I removed the fenders from the "white car" to work on the knee's and here is what I found.
The right side knee appears to have had someone try to adjust or take it apart. I was able to remove the broken bolt.(note the height of the inner cover to the outer cover and the dent to hold the inner from turning) I went back to the instructions that Chevgene sent me and removed the dust cover on the frame side of the knee and found the needle bearings starting to come out.
The left side looks good. i was disappointed to see needle bearings as I hoped that they would have the bushings I have read about.
The seal kit that I received from Apple Hydraulics has the bushings included. I guess my next step will be to disassemble them and search for a machine shop that can handle the size of the knee's.
I'm sorry they are not in order. This is my first post with pictures.

Chevrolet made knee-action units with the rollers only. If you find a unit with a bushing it has been rebuilt at one time.
The rollers are coming out because the shaft and housing are worn out

I checked the knee's in the "black car" and was surprised that a previous owner, before my "Uncle Bill", had the knee's rebuilt. Removed the inner cover and found this......

I would call that a stroke of luck. its no too unusual to fine a car with rebuilt knees as some of those cars had a hard life and were still worth some good money after WWII.

my next step will be to check the packing nut to see if it has packing rope or a late type seal. I've checked a couple of local hardware stores and have not been able to find the pencil size rope that your articles have mentioned. Any suggestions??

Maybe your good knees are of the Sears variety as shown in this 1948 Sears catalog. You could buy both left & right knees for $31.50 a pair.
Packing of several types, including graphite impregnated,teflon,PTFE,TFE,Carbon,Kevlar,etc can be purchased from the McMaster-Carr catalog from Chicago. Sizes are from 1/8" to 1/2". Their small packs of 4 or 5 feet cost $35 years ago, depending on size.

I took your advice and checked McMaster-Carr and found a dozen different types of graphite ropes. Now I just have to decide which is the best for my application.
