Is there an easy way to replace the copper mesh air cleaning elements in my '37 and '40 Chevy air filters? <img border="0" alt="[twix]" title="" src="graemlins/twix.gif" /> [LIST]

Yes, just remove the old one and install the new.It was sold under part number 1528439 and fits 1937-48 cars (with out oil bath air cleaner). It consisted of the mesh and the screen type casing around it.They show up at swap meets, G&D ads and on Ebay.

Chevgene,
They both seem to be securely enclosed. I wasn't sure how to remove them without damaging the cleaner case.

Chevgene,
I forgot to mention, mine are both the oil bath type.

Oh-Thats different. The elements for the oil bath air cleaners were not serviced. If the original is still there I would leave it alone or add a new "layer" of mesh if old is missing. The mesh is a secondary dirt trap. The majority of dust is drawn into the oil.

Thanks Gene. The mesh in both are in pretty good shape. I'll just leave them alone, as you suggest.
