I picked up a complete 37-39 transmission in good order at a swapmeet but on comparing it with other parts I have the spigot on the input shaft that goes into the crankshaft bearing is 3/4 inch long while the other I have is 1 inch long.Does anyone know which year is which?

Post all the numbers you can find on both transmissions. Particularly the drivers side near the top.

In the states, '38 and '39 used a ball bearing clutch throw out bearing. 1937 would have used a carbon bearing. The front bearing retainer will have a snout for the late bearing. The retainer for the carbon bearing is more of a ring.
My 1941 catalog says all pass and 1/2 ton 3 speed trans used the same main drive gear (aka pilot shaft or input shaft). The 3/4 and 1 ton trucks for '38 and '39 used a different part.
All truck 3 speeds for these years used a longer case and main shaft than the passenger transmission, so a truck unit should be easily distinguished from a passenger car trans.
The truck trans was made longer so it would be the same length as the 4 speed. I hope this helps.

The numbers cast into the transmission on the right side are
150
2
590822
GM

K6
2
590822
GM
I should add at this point that these will be parts from Canadian manufactured RHD cars assembled in NZ.The complete transmission has the shorter input shaft with 3/4 inch spigot The other is in pieces. I think you may have answered my question tho. The one in pieces is probably a collection of unmatched parts including a 3/4 ton input shaft
Thanks everyone

Colin,
Your casting number is for '37-'39 passenger. If the K and 6 are part of the casting date, it could indicate a November, 1936 date. However, they should be separated by a day number of 1 through 30 (as in K 15 6 would be Nov. 15, 1936)
