I am refurvishing a 1938 Horn for mounting on the intake maniforld. I know it should be black (paint). I just want to check to see what you can tell me about the gloss of the paint?

Is the paint for the horn flat, semi-gloss, or gloss?

Thank you.

This may sound strange but its between semi-gloss and gloss.

Can you recommend a brand that will approximate that sheen?

The last I used was Krylon brand. This goes back at least 10 years. Hope they haven't changed their formula. Some of the enamels today have a very high gloss.

If one uses a paint with too much gloss one can "knock down" the gloss a bit by wet sanding the paint with paper in the 400 to 600 range. (400 may be a little to course)

Start with the finner paper and see how you like it and then coursen up the paper (lower the number) until it comes out as you like it.

I used a black engine enamel (gloss) and toned it down as above. I think it is correst now. All the best to your efforts. Keep 'em rolling.
