Yes there were....but they were not available from the Chevrolet factory.They would have to have been installed by the dealer.White wall tires are considered a correct Chevrolet feature by the VCCA.

I'm just sort of curious.....

1. What was the first year white walls were available from Chevrolet (factory)??

and

2. What is the first year white wall tires are considered a "correct Chevrolet feature" by the VCCA??

That's interesting. White walls were not provided by Chevy but they are considered correct in judging if a car is "from the factory"? That seems odd since white walls are not a technological improvement to tire design. I guess since no one has the original tires on the car, as long as they fit, they are correct.

Apparently whitewalls are not considered correct by all VCCA judges. For some reason, it seems judges acknowledge that whitewalls are correct on a car, even my cars, but not a pickup. If whitewalls were a dealer installed item, doesn't it stand to reason that those same whitewalls could be installed on a pickup, especially one with the same tire size as a car, 6x16? I was docked points for having whitewalls on my pickup.

Your point about white walls on pick-ups makes sense to me. I guess you and Oscar will have to be content with winning Best of Show. Even if you were docked for the white walls.

Oscar sure looks good.

Once again we see how VCCA judging can be a real hassle. I'll be curious to hear what others who know more about judging have to say about all this.

I worked in a Goodyear dealership from 1949 to late 52 when I got the friendly greeting, any way we always had "takeoffs" or orginal tires on new cars that were replaced with whitewalls or upgraded tires. Of course whitewalls were history for a short time in 52/53.

I have never taken off points on a car with W.W's, had points deducted from my older cars, or ever heard of anyone loosing points due to W.W. tires.

Whitewall tires are well accepted at the VCCA Central Meets. As a chief judge, I have not heard of any problems with the running of white walls whether it is a passenger car or a truck. Points being taken off has Not happened at our meets that I am aware of. A car should have a white wall width similar to the one that would have been available at the time of manufacture. In other words, don't put a 1" wide white wall on a 1940 Chevrolet.
I personally like the look of white wall tires on my old Chevy.

I think that the whitewall tire issue has been discussed here in the past.....and, if I remember correctly (and I am the first to admit that my memory isn't the greatest invention on the planet), someone in the judging community stated that the cars are judged as they came from the dealer with only Chevrolet approved accessories. In the early years Chevrolets came from the factory to the dealer with blackwalls as standard equipment. Whitewalls could be installed on the car or truck at the dealer by customer request. As I recall someone in the VCCA judging system also stated that since whitewall tires were an aftermarket accessory item back in the 1930's, and since the cars are judged as they came from the dealer with only approved Chevrolet accessories, points should be deducted for whitewall tires.

Maybe someone on the VCCA judging committee can elaborate on this issue a little more.

Don't agree that points should be deducted only on pickups with whitewall tires because all vehicles, both passenger cars and pickup trucks alike should be judged the same in regards to the correct standard equipment and genuine Chevrolet accessories.

I just cannot believe something as simple as this black and white question should ever be a matter of local "judging" as the rules should be public information and available to everybody. there should never be any question in anybody's mind: either it is or it is not.
