I hate to see this forum sit unused so let me pose a couple of questions to stir up a little discussion:
How many of these V8's are known to exist?
Anyone have a good story about "undiscovered" V8's that might still be out there?
I count 20 complete cars with 17 of them in running or restored condition; 1 being currently restored; and 2 mostly parts cars. Then there are 2 more chassis which give a total of 22 known Model D's.

What is the status of the one that is or was in the Henry **** Museum in Dearborn. I haven't been there since the mid 80'S, was wondering if it is still there.

It was sold to a member in Los Gatos, California who was up grading from his part unrestored ex Couney Cox, ex Shaver Chevrolet D5 that was in turn was advertized in the January 1998 G&D and this rusty tin car exported to a member down in Australia. It is the only D5 currently being restored. The ex HF museum car is mostly original (correct AC Titan 1918 plugs) and does now get driven.

Hey Ken! "Shaver Chevrolet" as in the old Shaver Chevrolet in Homewood, Illinois? :confused:
NO - as in the Shaver Chevrolet in Merrillville, Indiana (just South of Gary). Richard Shaver was the member who had a building full of Chevrolet Convertibles with beige tops that ranged from a 1914 Royal Mail on up.

Yes I have been told lots of stories about V8 Chevrolets that were here in Australia that I have spent time and money going to look for only to find that they remain undiscovered.
I have only found an insurance reference to a V8 Chevrolet here in Australia and the only other infomation has only been promises of an advert that appeared in a South Australian newspaper.
But as yet nothing to prove that there were V8 Chevrolet model D's sent to Australia in the 1917-1919 period.
There are two Model D's in Australia and mine is the ex Courtney Cox, ex Shaver car and yes it is currently going through a complete last nut and bolt restoration. The new timber work is progressing and is at the centre pillar area.
Lots of panel work has already been carried out with only the r/h fenders and the tub section to be repaired. Radiator shell is repaired and new core from the Filling Station has this part finished. Engine has been rebuilt and the gearbox overhauled. Front springs and axle etc have been repaired and straighten. New gas tank made, windscreen post repaired hubcaps repaired, instruments fixed,carby rebuilt,and a new ring and pinion gears were made.
Many many parts have been restored and placed on the shelf to be fitted at the reassembly time. New tubes for the top irons have been made and ready to fit.
A great deal of work has been done and the wood work is about half way but as you can imagine this is not a simple task and must be correct. I look forward to the time when I can drive my brand new fully restored Chevrolet Model D V8 Tourer up the road.

By the way guys it is 2006 when this posting was placed and here in Sydney we have just had the hottest Jan 1st in 67 years with temps in the mid 40's. In you language that's over a 100 and lots of humidity. To hot for restoring and no good for thermo syphon Chevs.

Further to dave's comments on the record high temperatures. I placed my temp gauge in the sun and it went well past the top temp of 120.
I have a dash mounted Boyce temp guage in my 28 and it's just for show with the sender unit just coiled behind it AND THE GUAGE WENT UP 1/4 with car in the garage

Wow, We are suppose to get up to around 40 here today too, I think that's about 5 on yours. It should be at least around a -20 or so at night and 10 to 20 in the daytime. Just can't get a winter around here at all. :o :o
I really pity you guys over there, we get to use our Chevs all year round

Nice to be able to drive them 365 days, but when do you have the time for repairs and cosy winter evenings chatting in the club?
I love to be "down under", but still prefer Norway, even if we don't have the Meter Maids!

It's been over two years now that this post was started. how about an update on the restoring of the Chevrolet D V8 tourer.

Twin4 reporting.Just a quick update on the restoration of my Chevrolet Model D V8 Touring. The work has progressed on the body and I am now rewooding the doors, plus a lot of other little parts have been rebuilt and as you can imagine when every thing you touch is stuffed and needs to be restored things take time.
Ad a few rallies here and there and keeping the rest of the fleet mobile and time is short for restoring.
I am hoping to have the car completely assembled and all fitted and lined up in primmer before Christmas and ready to be all pulled apart for final paint and reassembly in the new year.
I will try and get some photos posted soon.

I really enjoy hearing about and seeing the pics of the members progress with their cars.
The other night I was fooling around on YouTube and came across video on the museum Chevy. Seems the fellow is entering this summer's Great Race around the world. I don't remember what keywords I used, but the video was great.
Gentlemen, Just recieved my latest Old Autos newspaper ( A Canadian by-weekly for Canadian old car guy's)They noted a small museum in Elkhorn Manitoba have a 1918 V8 in thier collection.
