I’m working on a 28 AB pickup 1/2 ton and the owner would like to freshen some cosmetics while I’m going through the mechanicals. The radiator cap and four hub caps are brass. Are any of the supposed to be nickel or was everything brass.

I looked up the part number of the 4-cylinder hub caps, and found that cars and 1/2 ton trucks (except for the G and 490 series) all have the same part number: 362486. Therefore, I suspect that these hub caps were all nickel plated over brass. I have a box of used, beat up hub caps that fit this description.

The hub caps for the one ton trucks (R, X, LM, LO, and LP) were steel and painted black.

Cheers, Dean

. Rod McCarthy paid great attention to authenticity when restoring his 1928 Cabriolet. He pointed out the 1928 only hubcaps that I hadn't seen before. (Photo #1) .
. My 27 and 28 passenger cars have more common hubcaps. (Photo #2) .Chevys made before 23 has a similar hubcap of smaller diameter.

The winged Wheel was an aftermarket hubcap.
The picture shows 3 different wing wheel caps, the first is for a 2 1/8" hub, the other 2 are 2 3/8" (23-28)
The winged wheel symbol was used on many aftermarket parts like motometers and aluminum step plates.

The first cap is an early 490 #h258 2 1/8"
The second (with a bowtie) is a 2 1/8" 490 cap till 1920 ish
The third is a 1921-22 490 cap 2 1/4" hub #24060
The forth is a 1923-28 cap. 2 3/8" #335450
My Jan. 1923 parts book lists the #335450 cap for a Superior and is used up till 1928.
The fifth cap is what Dean said is for 1 tons #345993 2 3/8"
There are other caps used on early 1 tons, FA and FB cars that are not listed here.

I have an FA parts list from February 1,1925 which lists a hub cap as P/N 40954. The center is black with the Chevy emblem and the rest of it is bright metal.
