weird issue to me. my distributor seems to cut when i retard the spark about 3/4 of the way, the ammeter will go down to 0 and no spark will be made at the coil. the issue pops up infrequently and irregularly but is a weird issue that i would like to solve.

I would check any wire that moves when you retard the spark. They may be failing inside and you can't see it.
