It’s me again Ky Joe
I just found out that I got a crack in my block it’s right at the GM plate right In the middle of the block. Not really sure what my options and could I possibly find a different block and put my head on it?

You do not mention a year of the engine you are working on. The early engines are prime candidates for threaded crack "stitching" since they have non pressurized cooling systems. You should be able to find examples of that procedure in the technical references on the VCCA home page.

. Hi Joe, What year block do you need? What is the casting number? (Not the serial number.)

Bummer!

I suggest that you pull the head off and make sure it is usable (not cracked too). The pre-1928 four cylinder engines are notorious for cracking near the single exhaust port because of all of that heat being concentrated in one spot.

The '28 engines distributed the heat better by having two exhaust ports. There are other improvements in the '28 engines too, such as push rod covers and more horsepower.

When a single exhaust type Chevy engine died, some folks replaced them with a '28 engine. It is mostly a bolt in affair, but there are a few items that need to be modified, such as where the exhaust pipe meets the exhaust manifold.

I’m tearing out a 4 cylinder out of my ‘28 and looking to sell. I’m located north of Dallas though.

What kinda shape is it and what are you asking for it ?
Posted By: Lou Re: Cracked engine Block - 03/31/22 02:35 PM
. Hi Joe, #346709 is a 27 engine without lifter covers. Do you need the block or complete short block? Shipping would cost a lot from SF Bay Area. I have used, condition unknown. I'll send pix later. Lou .

Ky_Joe.. price is negotiable for sure, and it’s in beautiful shape. It was cleaned up and ran about 7 years ago, I’m sure you can Chet it running with some minor tinkering. I can send pictures if you want and we can talk price.

Keep searching. As people hot rod them, the drive trains pop up regularly.

No worries.. I sent you an email, and I can pull the engine and drain the fluids (not in that order) lol.
I can build a quick stand and plop it in my truck and get it somewhere if needed also.

. . Hi Joe, . Here's pictures of some 27 engines I have with Cast number 346709. I'm farther than Texas but am driving to Kentucky Anniversary meet and could bring it at that time. First two photos are a bare block to replace your cracked block. Second is 27 engine with 28 head. You could use your 27 head.

FYI, if you're jumping into an engine rebuild, you might want to grab a few cups and read my rebuild adventure. Here's a link to the beginning of it: Resurrecting a '28 4 Banger

. Hi Joe,Send me an email if you like so as not to tie up the forum with details.
I have not tested the blocks to see if they run nor for cracks. You may have to rebuild for a reliable driver.

Getting a cracked block fixed is not that bad, so long as the crack does not go into the cylinder chamber, or as I discovered with my 28 last week ,the crack runs around the rear head bolt hole, so when the head was tightened it opened up the crack again, other wise the method mentioned earlier of stitching is super effective and economical when you consider another block may need to be rust cleaned washed painted re bored and new bearings cast, Ray
