Does anyone know if a Canadian built Chevy "490" is different.

I don’t know if the Canadian models are different or if someone added a gas tank in the rear and the vacuum tank to mine. The FB model has these as standard. The “490” came with the gas tank under the seat and no vacuum tank. The wheel base on the FB is 110" and the “490” is 102" according to the manual for the 1922 Chevrolet. This car is about 103. The FB came with 33 x 4" tires. The “490” 30 x 31/2". This car has 30 x 31/2". The steering wheel is 15" in the "490" and 18" in the FB. My car has a 15" steering wheel. That is the reason for my question. The specifications for both engines are in the manual but are different. Bore is the same for both. I don't know for sure which Touring model I have a "490" or a Chevrolet "FB 50" Touring car. Could you purchase the rear gas tank and vacuum tank as an option on the "490"? Thanks

The wheelbase gives it away. If it was an FB it would have the longer wheelbase. Main difference in engines is stroke I believe. Are you sure this is a 1922? I think superior models in 23 had 103" wheelbase and tank at the rear?
Canadian production is essentially the same as American with exceptions for interior fabrics, trim and sometimes paint colors. There may be some minor mechanical differences due to local suppliers but I doubt anything major.

The first figure in the Serial number shall be a number, indicating pruduction plant. If Canadian made (Oshawa plant) it should be 9 (nine).

According to Floyd Clymers "Early Chevrolet History" and other sources the 1922 Oshawa cars starts with 9A-47849 and ends with 9A-70543. Have you got the ID-plate? Is the registration permit the original, dated 1922? If not, you cannot be sure that the number in the registration permit is correct.

The 1923 had cone clutch.

I don't have the original permit from 1922. Where would I locate the serial number? Do you have the serial number range for 1923?

Turns out that once I checked the tag on the car it did actually start with a 9. It appears the rear gas tank and vacuum tank were added. Thanks Per-Ake for all your research. Mike

Measure your wheelbase accurately. If it is 103" then its a 23. 22 was 102". I was looking at a chassis diagram of the 23 and it shows the tank hanging off the back with no visible means of support. I am guessing it was strapped to the body.

Recently have discovered that the Canadian "490" Chev offered an option called the "490" Special Touring which included the vacuum gas feed system, nickel radiator shell, elbow pads on the door tops, bumper, striping, cord tires and a deluxe top for $110. This option was available in 1921 in Canada only some were exported to Britain. This information is in the Cars of Canada book a Craven Foundation History written by Durnford /Brechler. This option describes our Canadian built car.

Can you show a picture of the elbow pads on the doors please? Are they covered metal and mounted on the wood inside the door like the Buicks?
