I noticed the fourth lifter from the firewall has an much more oil coming up from the crankcase than the other lifters. Hard to quantify but after ideling a few minutes it was down the side of the motor and a 3 inch spot in the drip pan. The motor runs great so I am wondering if this is going to be a problem and what the cure might be.

It is obvious that both the lifter and the bore is badly worn. Lifters are made in oversizes, the problem is to find the oversize.

Hope someone else has faced this problem and has a suggestion.

A mate of mine many years ago had a similar problem with his 27 Chev. Unfortunately he passed away about 15 years ago. He fixed the leaking by glueing a small length of round tube that was a bit bigger diameter than the lifter, onto the block so that the tube went around where the lifter comes out of the block. Inside the tube he put an oil seal, from memory it was from a Datsun 180B, and never had another leak.
BTW He also fitted 4 wheel brakes to the 27 and had the 'engineered'

Thanks for the replies, interesting fix! It does seem strange that only one lifter would be worn to leaking. Could it be that the crankcase splash is more intense near this lifter (4th from firewall)?

I suspect that there is some pressurization of the crankcase or the splash is directed to the bottom of that lifter. Either of those will help force oil upwards past the lifter. Gravity will try to pull the oil downward.

Has the oil filler cap been changed?It should have perforated holes in it for the crankcase to breath.If it is a solid cap,crankcase pressure will force the oil out.

Good point the '28 was the first to use the solid cap as the crankcase vented through the carburetor air intake.

I checked the cap and it is vented but there is a piece of dense foam in the cap which is saturated with oil. should the cap vents be open with no filter or is the foam okay?

As long as the foam is open enough to allow free air movement then all should be okay. If it presents a restriction then pressurization of the crankcase is possible. The amount of blowby is also a factor.

When I drive my 27 over 42mph,I get a mess inside the engine bay from oil fumes up the oil filler pipe.

Previously on the old motor before the rebuild,it had a 1/2 pipe fixture on top of the oil filler tube and a length of rubber tube fitted which dropped the fumes out under the engine bay splash pan,similar to the large trucks and tractors.
When I rebuilt the motor I took all that off and used the perforated cap,but was getting the mess so I put the cap and pipe back on.
The cap is a proper made unit,not a cocky job.Perhaps a aftermarket unit.

I had a chance to run it without the foam and the oil stopped running out of the lifter. It still welled up around it but did not run down the motor. No real mess coming out of the oil fill tube. My parts book does not indicate a gasket or filter which seems a little strange considering the roads of the day.

On a lighter note an ingeneous elderly mate places an old sock over the oil filler cap on his 27. It catches the oil, and being a cocky (old farmer) who never throws anything away, he rings the oil out the sock back into the engine so there ie no wastage.
