What transmission do I have? I had always believed it was from my 1925, but not sure. (It never really mattered, I used a different one.)

The main housing casting body carries the following cast number: 590204. Below this is a circled "D" and a "B." A small machined boss surface at the rear of the main housing body has stamped numbers as follows: L132

I guessed this might be a date code of Dec. 13, 1922. But my other spare transmission (that I believe is a '28) in this same location has a much longer stamped number, too many digits for a date code.

The shifter cover has the following cast number: 590061 and an "R" above that.

The input shaft bearing housing has the following cast number: 590211

I would ultimately like to sell this to someone who needs it, but I need to figure out what it actually is first!

The 28 transmission has the date code on the drivers side near the top.

Go to Teck Talk and you will find casting numbers for many items to include transmissions.

I may have one like that also, The one I have has a letter D in a circle as well. I got it years ago from a guy who did a lot of scrapping and since the knob looked like the one on Dads 490. The shifter lever has a "Jog" to move it closer to the seat and it has a cast iron cap over the shifterhousing that moves with the shifter. The cap is like the one on my 23 Olds truck and on other model 43A cars I have seen. Dad thought it might be a truck trans since the input shaft is so heavy but we aren't sure either. After I looked at it a few weeks ago I wondered if it could be from a Chevy T truck or FA or FB. I will post pictures of it.

Hi, Ray -

I spent some time in Tech Talk, read throough the Casting Numbers post, etc -

but I don't find anything that addresses the casting numbers on the earlier 1920's transmission casings. It is distinctly possible that I am being blind, but I don't find it.

I have noticed that the transmission cases went from coarse threads to fine threads on the bolts to hold the transmission cover. Any idea when the change?

Thanks, Gents - I found it, Ray.

So then, it IS from a 1925. Interesting that we don't have casting numbers for the 1922-24 period, but have the earlier ones.

Anyone have need of a used 1925 transmission, or for that matter, I have a '28 that is allegedly rebuilt.
