Posted By: RonH Quantity of fabric for 1936 Standard Town Sedan - 11/22/13 02:23 AM
I am looking for seat and other fabric for a 1936 Town Sedan.

I have found one but am not sure how much fabric to buy?

I want to be sure to have enough for the seats, side panels ect. I'll buy a headliner separately. This fabric is 54" wide.
Any suggestions?

Also how bad will I get dinged in a show if is it's a synthetic and not the real mohair? The cloth I've found is a herringbone that looks a lot like the mohair after the fuzz has worn off?

Not looking for a concurs resto here but a nice driver that I may occasionally show.

Thanks
How many points will I be dinged?....depends on the judges knowkedge and the quality of the work.....perhaps none or could be up to 10.
It is great that you have found and plan to use a herringbone fabric than the "master" mohair on your '36 Standard.

I used a shorter "fuzz" herringbone fabric on my '36 Standard 30+ years ago and have never lost any points on the many VCCA judged shows that I had it in. I am now losing minor points for wear but not fabric "fuzz".

I have found the biggest problem with VCCA judging is that at times some "judges" didn't know that '36 Standards are supposed to have different fabric than their big brother Master.

The chances of having an "original" herringbone mohair '36 Standard next to you on a judging field are slim! There aren't many '36 Standards out their.
Thanks for the info guys.

Anyone have a guess at how much fabric I should buy? Don't want to come up short.

Thanks
At 54" wide should be wide enough for the rear seat back and cushion (measure them). If it is allow 8' for the rear seat. Another 8' for the rear quarter side panels and arm rests. If 54" is wide enough for the front doors another 6' feet there. Another 12' for the front seats. Tht would be 37". I would say 40' at least.
for the interior would leave some left over for errors, etc.
How much a yard does it cost?
About $12 a yard.

That would be well south of $200 total. VS. The mohairs at $100 a yard.

I have samples and it's a heavy weight fabric perfect for upholstery.
The first thing I would do is make sure the 54" is wide enough for the rear seat back rest. Note there can be a seam where it begins to curve around to the sides. Also make sure the front door panels anr not more than 54" alowing for aat least a 1/2" wrap around on the sides.
Being Herringbone the pattern must be kept verticle , some thing to consider also.
For only 12.00 a yard a yard or two extra w would be nice to have incase anything ever got damaged.
In one place they state that they have only 3 yards????
Too bad it is so brown. A more gray tone would have been better.
They have larger quantities. That's just the ad I found.

I'll end up ordering 15 yds I think. Better to be safe than sorry.

I still have some of what looks like the original covering on my seats and they are (Coffee with milk) brown. Even in the places that where hidden from the sun. So I'm actually going with a slightly lighter shade of brown than the original, I think. Unless you're telling me they ONLY came in grey originally??? Thanks
It was what I would call a tan/gray. The hidden areas some times change colors also....other than that if you like the looks of the material go for it.
I am doing a 1936 Standard, Town Sedan made in the last half of '36. It had the original seat covers on it when I bought it. If you need additional information send a PM.

Tom, you'll have better luck starting your own thread than piggybacking on a 9 year old thread.
