My 33 coupe drivers door latch return spring broke. I have a new replacement spring but it appears that you have to take the assembly apart to replace the spring. It is held together by metal tabs that are bent tight to hold it together. Has anyone replaced a spring in one of these and how did you do it? It looks like it would be best to heat the tabs so they don't break off. I don't want to ruin the whole latch assembly. Any help would be appreciated!

You have a good understanding on what is required to replace the broken spring. It is only necessary to warm the tabs to a dull color and allow to cool to remove the hardening from the initial bending. Then repeat before reassembling. If the tabs break a MIG tack can secure the parts but be sure to keep the spring cool enough to not lose the spring tension.
