Hey,

I’m looking for pictures of a 1940, Chevy PU ignition switch so I know what they look like when I try to buy. The usual suppliers don’t seem to have the correct type of switch.

If anybody has a good one, let me know.

Thanks,

Mike

I have no clue if this is correct or now but it came up in a search. It is listed by a highly respected electrical vendor.

Mike,
I'll look to see if I have a correct electrolock for you. While they are not meant to be taken apart, it is possible to disassemble them, replace the wire and put them back together without leaving any visible signs after installation. If you are up for that job, I'm sure I can help you.

I have one complete with coil and keys that came with a bunch of other parts I bought at a swap meet some years ago. It has “ears” one on each side for securing to the dash. I was told back then it came off a 1940 Chevy car. I don’t know if it would be correct for a 1940 truck.

The truck electrolock does not have the mounting ears in 1940. It mounts in the dash only with the trim nut. This part goes back to 1935 on various models.
1940 car is a one year only switch. The parts book says it will have a D or B on the case. '37/'39 switches also had the ears (I think) and are marked with D 37 on the case.

Thank you, Mike. That’s good information for a confirmation of my recollection and what the swap meet dealer said.

The switch in Tiny's post above, is an aftermarket switch.

I knew it wasn't OEM but didn't know if it was correct for that application or not. Sometimes one has to use non OEM parts.

Judging from experience restoring my ‘46 1/2 ton any used switch and coil assembly maybe even nos ones, would cause me to use caution. They may need rebuild because of insulation deterioration. This one was so compromised the insulation crumbled to bare wire in several spots. This condition was discovered in the process of cleaning the entire switch to coil assembly.

i have a 33 eagle. I do not know what a pop out switch is compsred to a on/off type. Could I get some info on this. Mine has the armored cable and the small paper clip hole in front to release it. Thank you

1933 Chevrolets used a pop-out switch early and later an "on/off" switch. They look the same except one does not turn and then pop-out, just turns.
