Hello All,
I am in the process of rebuilding a generator to be used in my 51. Unfortunately, I neglected to take a picture of the electrical connections at the brush holders. Does the field coil connection piggyback on one of the brush connection? Dumb mistake so I'm hoping for some help from you all.

Jeff,

I don't think there is anywhere else for it to go. So, yes.

When you put the end on with its alignment hole for the case dowel, it goes with the brush wire on the closest brush holder. It will not reach the other one.

Generally, all you to need to do with the generator is clean the commatater (sp) and install new brushes. Upon running the engine, If the charge needle reads bassackards then you need to polarize it ( generator) by using a short piece of wire, quickly touching the two terminals closest to the passenger side of the voltage regulator. BATT and (can't remember the other one. Probably GEN but not FLD. Someone else will know and post it right.

I think JD over in Oregon rebuilds generators to show quality and, thus, could answer your question much better than I. You may want to PM him.

Best,

Charlie computer

Charlie,
Thanks very much for your quick response. I did find a photo on line showing the connections and the two leads are piggybacked. I did as you suggested (cleaning the commutator and bought new brushes). Again, thanks for you help.

Generator update.Charlie, thanks again for the help. I reassembled the generator with new brushes and brought it to an old time generator/starter rebuilder here in Detroit for testing. It tested out perfect and is ready to install.
