Hi Guys,

I have several of these, and some have up and down movement in the main shaft between the top of the drive gear and the bottom of the housing, others very little. I recently purchased a NOS unit that has about a washer thickness of up and down movement. In the past I have taken this movement out, but I am now thinking it should be there.

Anyone have an idea as to what it should be?

Cheers

That movement should be there.

There is an oil pump thrust washer that sits on top of the oil pump. The washer is approx. .075" thick and this thrust washer causes the distributor main shaft and weight plate to move up in the distributor housing when the distributor is installed. This is done so the weight plate inside of the distributor is not turning on the distributor housing thus causing excessive wear to the inside of the distributor housing.
