Misinterpreted throughout bearing noise - 03/17/23 05:58 AM
On my ’45 Chevy 1/2 Ton, I’m following a challenging PO.
After replacing the throughout bearing, there was still some of the same noise. However, this noise was unique in that it only sounded in the area of the clutch pedal being around 1/2 way out. In other words, it was quiet both as the clutch was totally engaged and totally disengaged.
We kinda suspected the Pilot Bushing, but when things were apart for the throughout bearing replacement, the Pilot Bushing appeared brand new and in good shape. But still, we were following the PO… so who knows?
Getting things pulled apart again today, the problem appeared. The flywheel is fastened to the crank with 6 special, thin-headed 3/8” bolts. They are thin-headed to keep from scraping the springs on the clutch disk. The PO had replaced the thin-headed bolts with some standard Grade 8 bolts. They were scraping on the clutch springs, making the noise.
See the 2 attached photos. With a close look, you can see some of the bolt heads worn down a little. In the other photo, you can also see some worn down flat spots on some of the springs. Not good.
So let that be a lesson to ya…
