This is for a 34 Chevy Master.
My linkage seems to be binding or stuck. It appears to be at the pivot area where the linkage rods connect to what I’ll call the pivoting pin (this has the rods and springs connected to it)
Does this pivot suppose to move freely. Also there appears to be a bushing on the ends. See the screw driver pointing to it.
I can’t find any close up pictures or descriptions.
I have 2 of the rods disconnected already.
How can I repair this to get my rear brakes working?

It should rotate freely. Will need to be removed, rust removed, greased and reassembled.

Thanks Gene I appreciate the help.

Gene,
Thanks for the help on my 34 master brake linkage. I had to rework the rear adjusters and linkage. (It was rusted up).
I now have another issue. The car stops but my right rear wheel seems to be bound up. When driving the car it turns ok. But when I tried to adjust the brakes, I can’t get the wheel to even turn by hand when it’s jacked up.

Any ideas as to why it would be bound up? Do I need to pull the axle?

I am afraid that you will neeed to pull the axle/drum.

I was afraid of that. Thanks again.
Any idea what I should look for when I get the axle out?

Going by what you found so far I would guess rust.

I hope you have a shop manual.
While you are inspecting everything, make sure the part of the brake cam lever that fits onto the brake shoe cam's shaft is free to rotate inside the cam lever's housing. Remove the adjusting screw from cam lever, and inject chassis grease in there. Reinstall the adjusting screw, and force the grease into the housing.

Ok guys I’m sort of stuck again on the rear axle removal. I hate to ask simple questions but I don’t want to make any mistakes as it’s the 1st time I’ve done this.

I have the differential cover off. I see the center block that I think I need to remove to get the C clip out to pull the axle. I’ve read somewhere that I need to remove the differential pinion shaft screw. Then the block will come out.
I only see a standard screw and what looks like a bearing cap with 3 bolts in it. Do I only take the screw out?

1. I need to know where the differential shaft screw is?
2. And if I remove it what else will come out or fall out of place?
3. Will the axle just pull out easily?

Hi, I also just realized I’ve never put a picture of my 34 Master on here.
So here it is.

I’ll try again.

JJC, the screw you remove is the flat-head slotted screw that you see in your picture. Do not remove the hex bolts. There is an unthreaded portion of the screw that enters into the round pin that is also visible in your picture. After removing the screw, remove the pin, remove the square spacer, push the brake drums toward the middle of the car, remove the C-shaped axle retainers and slide the brake drum/axle assembly out. Do not hesitate to ask any question.

Bill and Gene, thanks for the help on my 34 Master brakes.

I pulled the axles and found rust and debris in the brake cam mechanism.
First thing I found was the right rear axle would not come out due to the brakes being adjust too tight and with all the rust the cam was bound up.
I got it apart and cleaned up everything. The brake shoes and drums were in great shape
I reassembled it and did the left rear the same way..
I cleaned up the differential cover and installed a new gasket and lube.
All seems good so far. I took it for a test drive yesterday.
Thanks again., Joel
