Is it possible to back the rear bushing adjusting nut out all the way without removing the pump from the engine? I purchased plumbing teflon twine I am thinking I can wrap the shaft a couple of times, screw the nut back on and slow down the drip. Any thoughts? (Besides the fact that I may be the nut in question)

Teflon twine worked for me, and my 36's water pump has been leak-free for about 5 years.

Great tip! I'll use this technique on my '27 LM.

Cheers, Dean

Can the nut simply be backed out?

The nut can be backed out and leave enough room to cram some rope type packing in before reinstalling the nut.
