Recently looked at a restorable '70 Monte Carlo. It is a 4-Speed, Bench Seat car which is pretty interesting. The trans is still in it and the owner says it's a T-10, but if it's original, like I believe it is, shouldn't it be a Muncie for sure?

Any info would be appreciated.

I haven't taken time to look it up as yet but would guess if its a small block it would be a Saginaw and a big block a Muncie.

Hi Bill,
If the Monte is a small block car it could have come with one of three manual transmissions for '70 model year.A Saginaw 3-speed,Saginaw 4-speed(wide ratio)or a Muncie 4-speed(rpo M20 wide ration)).The T-10,although widely used by GM was not used in a Chevrolet pass car during that time.I believe 1974 we started seeing the second design Super T-10's again after the serious hi-po days had peaked.
If the Monte your considering has the orig engine and is a 350 2bbl(250hp)then it would have the Saginaw wide ratio 4 speed. If it had the 350-300hp 4bbl then it should have the Muncie wide ratio M-20.
If the car's interior is original you could get lucky and find a build sheet or possibly a chassis broadcast copy under the back seat! Hope this helps. Jim downum 70' Impala

Appreciate the info y'all.

I always figured by that time, 1970, they were all Muncie's. I believe this car is a 2-Barrel, therefore my hope of a Muncie seems out.

Altho, if a person ordered this car special, could they had specified a Muncie?

I guess the best thing to do, is for me to just get under there and see what it is.

Even tho I could run the numbers, I believe I'm safe in saying that if a magnet sticks to it, it's not a Muncie.

Would you all agree?

Hi Bill,
I dug a little deeper and all my research says no,the orig owner could not have specified the muncie gear box if he had the base 350-2bbl engine. If he had ordered the 350-300 4bbl yes he would have recieved the muncie.
The magnet is/has been a pretty reliable trick for the 4 speeds in the 60's.
Here's an interesting twist for the '70 model year that I was not aware of.I found this info in the book "Chevrolet by the numbers 70-75".Starting in 70 Muncie actually took over production of the Saginaw wide ratio 4 speeds! Also, when you do the magnet test also look for the new for 1970 main case drain plug at bottom of the trans. This would all but insure that you have an original '70 Saginaw 4 speed built by Muncie! If I was going to get under the car I would take the extra time to get all the numbers off of it,though. Hope this helps,Jim

Appreciate the good info Jim.

Just to make sure I have it perfectly clear, is the '70 Saginaw that you are refering to still Cast Iron?

My 1975 parts book describes the Sag. case as iron and the Mun. as aluminum.
