Under what conditions does it burp?

If it burps after the engine has not been run for a week or so when starting place lever in neutral not Park, and run the engine for two or three minutes (in neutral) before shutting it off or place in Drive and take off.
The 1950-1954 Power Glide engine should never be run while in the Park position for any length of time as there is no trans. fluid circulation when in Park. Along with refilling the converter the fluid lubricates the internal parts of the transmission. The torque converter will drain down when the engine is not run for a longer time and for it to refill the P.G has to be in neutral or Drive. When the T.C drains down as it overfills the PG fluid and burps.
Also I run the fluid level near the add mark when hot - it will be below the full mark when cold.

It is OK to start the engine in Park but if you are going to run the engine for any length of time use neutral.

I keep my 53 PG at or just above the add mark cold. I start in neutral. The only time I let it run in Park is the few seconds after putting it in Park before turning the key off.
