I have a 1927 Capital AA. i just had my carburetor rebuilt and the mechanic said I should have an air filter. Did this model have air filters? And can one be installed?

Hi pedalpusher2,

Yes, the 1927 did have an air filter of sorts. Built around the header pipe is a heat stove. A flexible pipe runs from the intake to the carburetor to a fitting on this heat stove. Also from this heat stove a pipe runs vertical and at the end of this pipe is the air filter. This filter is not how you expect a filter to look if you are comparing it to a modern filter. This filter is a can (somewhat like a can of vegetables) that is closed on one end and has a pipe to connect to the pipe from the stove. Around this connection is a circle of slots that are slanted all in the same direction. In theory, air is sucked into the can through the circle of slots and this action causes the air to circulate and "sling" any debris out a small slot near the closed end of the can. The air now enters the stove and is heated before it is sent to the intake to the carburetor to be mixed with the fuel.

In essence, it has been mechanically "filtered".

My 28 using this air filter (or lack of) has survived for 75 years. I doubt if many modern cars using the lastest air filtering technology will be around in 75 years time ;>)

If you really want an airfilter, try one of the repo AirMaze filters that fit Zenith carboretors. They are seen mostly on F-ords but the were really just a universal fit filter. You can get them with either the era type screen or a paper element around $30.
