Engine is replaced with a 6 cylinder from 1934... The car is located in Denmark. Picture taken the first day running in 5 years. After restoring the waterpump (new axle) the car started almost immediately, and I have to say she is running smooooth! Agrin

And dual cowl also.

Would really be interesting to see some close shots of the engine installation. I am led to believe that the transplant is not that difficult.

I'll take and post pics tomorrow... I don't know much about the engine change, but I there isn't that much room left... They (my grandfather and brothers) had to cut the torpedoplate to make the engine fit.

The windscreen also looks like a 29 open car.

Does this car have a data plate with a serial number? I believe this was located on the passenger side wooden frame rail. The serial number should begin with an XB or XS or some other combination of letters and/or numbers following the X. If plate is missing, the number might be found on the car's registration papers.

Second windbreaker. Very nice while driving. You sit in the back and pull to cowl towards you. The linnen then protects you from rain/wind.

Can you tell which engine type it is? I have a Danish repair manual, but there is several types...

Bumping old thread. The data plate is there. Serial begins with "XB. A. B.". Hard to read because the data plate is painted over :-/

What can be concluded from this?

If the car is assembled in Copenhagen (XB), Antwerpen (XD) or Stockholm (XS) you will not find the data plate mounted as in America. It will be fixed to the fire wall inside the engine room, when it is assembled before around 1935. The ID consist of four letters and three to four figures stamped into the plate: f.ex. XBAB 0110. X for export, B for Copenhagen, AB for 1928 and the production # from that year. Almost always this will be the only way of recognizing the chassis # on the car, and unfortunately also makes a lot of difficulties when the plate is missing and no (original) papers can be shown to the registration office.

So far CCON has discovered only two cars with the chassis # stamped into the (right rear part of) beam of the chassis, one from Copenhagen and one from Karlsruhe., Only US and Canada-factory made cars have shown the American ID-platings (chassis#, job#, color#, etc.) before 1936. We think the assembly factories outside America started to copy the US way of IDmarking from 36 for passenger cars, but I have to check with two other guys to be sure, and as to the trucks/buses.

This must have been quite an old modification. Do you know when it was made?

The 6 cylinder engine was mounted in 1950-51 by my grandfather. I believe it was from a Chevrolet truck but I'm not absolutely sure.

I will try to find the engine number and post it here.

The data plate is mounted on the wooden frame right beneath the front passenger seat. It says XBAB and then the serial number so it is in fact assembled in Copenhagen in 1928.

As another curiosity the car has a 2-circuit hydraulic brake system. It's been very hard to find parts for this but we have recently succeeded in finding a set of slave brake cylinders. The car has just been inspected so we can register it again.

If that is the original Chevrolet data plate, it is unusual mounted for Copenhagen cars, as far as I know.

Good luck with the registered car.

This is exactly the same place where the data plate was on my Copehagen built 1928 touring.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I think it makes sense to pick up where I left off :-)

I was trying to identify the engine using the numbers stated above. Searching the forum I've found the "473741" means it's a 1934 DC Standard. Using Google it states it's a 182 CUI with 3 main bearings. Can anyone confirm this is correct?

What about the "J 24 4" - what does that mean?

The engine serial number is: MI55042

I've been told the engine was from a 1934 truck but that doesn't seem to match the information that it is a 1934 DC standard?

Any help is appreciated!

Oh and by the way the car is now registered and has historic licenses plates with the numbers it used to have as new. By the way it was quite interesting to have the inspection/MOT done by the officials to state it was roadworthy :-)

SVK,

I lived in Denmark for a couple of years in the 70's. For some reason I thought that cars of your vintage were right handers. I noticed that your 28 is a left hander. Is my memory just bad or what?

I'm from 1984 so I haven't lived to see the 70's :-)

Though I'm pretty sure you are mistaken. We've always been driving on the right side of the road - opposed to Sweden fx.

I've visited a lot of get togethers with vintage and classic cars and overall very, very few cars are right handers. Typically Morgans, a few E-types etc. I don't recall I've ever seen a vintage car (1920-1930's) here in Denmark that was a right hander.

SVK,

Well I'm not that old. I was just 20 or thereabouts when I lived in DK. I just have this vague recollection about reading an article where Denmark made a switch to the right side of the road, just before or after the war. I probably hallucinated the whole thing or maybe I just really am that old now.

Ahh. Then I'm guessing you must be thinking about Sweden. They converted from right to left hand drive in 1967 so you might have been in Denmark when it happened?
